Flatware

Goal: This was a creative challenge to create photographs that show flatware in unique and interesting ways.

Challenge(s): Reflections! Finding interesting compositions using common items. Lighting shiny objects in different ways.

Solution: When photographing highly reflective subjects, the reflections have to be tightly controlled. Large diffusers surrounding the flatware, combined with large soft boxes, eliminate distractions and spread soft, diffused light across the subjects. Several unconventional arrangements resulted in artistic views of common objects. Adding a highly reflective surface provided a mirror-like effect adding even more visual impact. Shooting with a macro lens helped isolate portions of the subjects to create some abstract photos. One image is a composite of two photographs identically exposed pulled together in post production.

Result: Several images of very common items that are more artwork than simple photos. These are made to work well in kitchens, dining areas, restaurants, food service areas, and can be placed on menus, cards, or used as wall art in many locations.
